The long table — a note on the dinners I plan

Why so many of my trips end at a table for twelve in someone's home, and why I think you should say yes.

The long table — a note on the dinners I plan

There is a moment on almost every trip I plan where I put a guest at a long table with strangers — usually in a home, usually outdoors, usually on the last or second-to-last night.

People are wary of it, and then they aren't. Something happens at a long table that does not happen anywhere else on a trip. You end up talking to the person on your left for an hour because the person on your right is deep in a conversation of their own. You eat things you would not have ordered. You stay too late.

I think of it as the punctuation of a good trip. The exclamation point before the plane home.

Say yes to the long table.
