On going slow (and why I stopped counting cities)
A note on the quiet luxury of doing less on a trip — and why the best day I had last year had nothing in it.
Yazan: Ekaterina · July 12, 2026

I used to count cities. Seven in ten days, four countries in two weeks — the way some people count steps. I thought I was collecting the world. What I was actually collecting was a very tired version of myself.
The turning point was a Tuesday in a small town on the Amalfi coast. I had planned nothing. I sat in the same café for three hours reading a paperback with a broken spine, watched a cat pick a fight with a pigeon, and had a second coffee. When I think about that year, I think about that Tuesday.
This is the thing hospitality school does not teach you and hotels rarely sell: the empty afternoon. The unbooked day. The gap between things. I now build one into every trip I design, on purpose, and I tell people not to fill it.
You do not need to earn your holiday by exhausting it.
