The Lisbon list (that I actually use)

Not the twenty-things-to-do version. Just the places I keep going back to, in the order I walk them.

Every couple of months I get a note asking for my Lisbon list. I've never written it down properly, so here it is — the short one.

Start early. Coffee and a pastel de nata at Manteigaria in Chiado, standing at the counter. Then walk to Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara before the tour groups.

Late morning: the tile museum. Yes, really. Give it two hours.

Lunch: a small tasca in Graça — I'll send you the name. Do not ask for the menu, ask what they made today.

Afternoon: nap. Actually nap. This is Lisbon.

Evening: fado in Alfama, in a room with about twelve tables. Book it, but let the night wander after.

I would send you here if you want beauty without spending the week fighting crowds. I'd keep you out of Fira, split the stay between Oia and quieter Megalochori, and protect one full day from plans.

I'd choose Amalfi for you if the sea matters more than checking off towns. We would travel by small boat whenever possible, sleep away from the loudest streets, and treat Ravello as an evening rather than a hurried day trip.
