Six small hotels I keep sending people to

None of them are on the front page of any magazine. All of them will remember your name by day two.

Six small hotels I keep sending people to

The great small hotels have a smell — of clean linen and something warm from the kitchen — and a person at the desk who does not treat you like a room number.

I am not going to name all of them here (some things stay between me and the guests), but if you write to me I'll send you the whole list. A few teasers:

A ten-room pensione in Puglia where breakfast is served in the garden and the owner insists you take a fig home.

A four-room farmhouse an hour outside Kyoto where the futons are aired every morning on the veranda.

A converted lighthouse on the Portuguese coast with exactly one table for dinner.

You can tell a good small hotel within ten minutes of arrival. It is quiet in a specific way — not empty, just calm — and someone offers you water without being asked.
